For all residents of New Jersey, the time eventually comes when you need to renew your current vehicle registration before it expires. While renewal is done annually, this might be your first time, and you may have some questions. In this article, we will introduce the ways you can fulfill vehicle registration renewal requirements in NJ without any problems.
Vehicle Registration Renewal Notification
About three months prior to the expiration of your current vehicle registration, NJ MVC will mail a notice to you. If you wish to take advantage of the online portal, you need to do this before the renewal notification expires. Be sure to check the date on the notification.
Renew Your Registration in Person
When you need same-day renewal or you are unable to complete your renewal online or by mail, going in person is your best bet. Should someone need to go on your behalf, have them granted Power of Attorney.
To renew, you must go to the MVC with the following:
- Proper ID
- The registration renewal notification
- Registration certificate
- License plate number
- Proof of auto insurance
- Check, money order, credit card, or cash to pay the fee.
Most MVC locations have hours from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm on weekdays.
NJ has made it quick and easy to complete the vehicle registration renewal process online. You will need:
- The PIN on the bottom right corner of the notification
- Access the online portal, MyMVC
- Input the necessary information by following the directions in the MyMVC system.
Note: You cannot access the web portal after the expiration date printed on the notice. If you have to renew your registration after it has expired, you will need to visit the MVC office near you.
If you lose your notification letter or PIN but have time before the renewal expires, you can call MVC Customer Support (609-292-6500) on a weekday to receive the PIN number.
Any online convenience fees will be waived.
Renew by Mail
When you receive your renewal notification letter, you are given the option of using the return envelope to submit the payment by check or money order and send it to the following address:
New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission
Revenue Processing Center
PO Box 009
Trenton, NJ 08646-0009
The included envelope may be pre-addressed for your convenience. It will take about a week for the MVC to process the application. You can always check the status of your application online to confirm it has been received.
Applicable Vehicle Registration Renewal Fees
The NJ MVC fees for registration renewal are dependent on the following factors:
- Vehicle weight
- Vehicle model and year
- Vehicle type
You can learn how the fee is calculated by reading the NJ MVC fee chart.
For drivers who are 65 years old and above, NJ MVC offers a discount on renewal fees.
While NJ doesn’t charge any late fees for failing to re-register on time, this doesn’t mean you can keep an expired registration. Those who are caught driving without current vehicle registrations will receive a ticket.
Payment options include all major credit cards, cash, money orders, and checks.
New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle Commission offers a number of ways for you to renew your vehicle registration before it expires. Because renewal happens annually, once you get through this process, you will be able to complete it much faster than next time around. Now that you know what you need, your vehicle registration renewal will go smoothly.
