Obtain New Drivers License

If you want to get a new drivers license in New Jersey, there are a few you have to do.

New Jersey Examination Permit

This is the first step in getting your new drivers license.

  • Pass the written test and the vision screening
  • Provide the 6-point ID requirements like:
  • Certified birth certificate or passport
  • Pay the $10 exam permit fee

With your Examination Permit, you must be accompanied by a licensed driver that is 21 or older and has at least 3 years of driving experience. You cannot use any handheld devises like your cell phone while you are driving. Be sure to wear your seatbelt at all times.

Probationary License

After holding your Examination permit for at least 3 months you may take the New Jersey MVC driving test. Once you have passed this, you will be allowed to drive unsupervised.

Full Drivers License

Once you have had your probationary license for a full year, you can go into the MVC and have your picture taken for your full driver’s license. You will need to surrender your probationary license and pay a new drivers license fee of $24.

Applying for a driver’s license for a teenager

Young adults and teenagers applying for their first drivers license will have to complete the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) graduated driver licensing (GDL) program. The GDL program is designed to give young drivers the experience they need to be safe on the roads.

New Jersey GDL program

Any new driver under 21 years of age must complete the GDL requirements to receive a driver’s license. The GDL requirements are as follows:

Special Learner’s Permit

  • You must be at least 16 years old
  • Provide a primary source of identification such as your birth certificate, passport or certificate of citizenship or naturalization
  • Provide proof you have enrolled in a driver’s education course
  • Submit a signed letter of consent from your parent or guardian
  • Pass a vision exam
  • Pass the written test
  • Pay the student learner’s permit fee of $10
  • When you have finished 6 hours of driver’s training you will need to go back to your local MVC office to get your student learner’s permit validated

Examination Permit

  • You must be at least 17 years old
  • Provide the 6-point ID verification documents
  • Pass a vision exam
  • Pass the written test
  • Pay the examination permit fee of $10

Probationary Driver’s License

  • You must be at least 17 years old
  • Practiced supervised driving for at least 6 months
  • Pass your road test
  • Provide the 6-point ID verification documents

Unrestricted Driver’s License

  •  You must be at least 18 years old
  • Spent at least one-year practicing unsupervised driving with your probationary driver’s license

For your 6-point ID verification documents, you must provide one primary ID, one secondary ID, a verifiable social security number, and proof of your address.
