Change Vehicle Registration Name

If you’ve legally changed your name in the state of New Jersey, you’ll need to update the Motor Vehicle Commission regarding the name change. You’ll need to update your driver’s license, certificate of title, and vehicle registration card.

Updating Your Driver’s License

You’ll need to update your license before you change your vehicle title and registration. You only have one week following your official name change to submit your application for an updated driver’s license. If you submit your application after a week, you’ll be subject to late fees.

Driver’s licenses must be updated in person at your local MVC office. There is no way to change your license name by mail, by phone, or online. You’ll have to bring proof of your identification (current license, military I.D., passport, etc.), legal proof of your name change, and proof of your new address (a bank account statement, rental agreement, utility bill, etc.). You’ll also need to provide your Social Security number and pay an $11 fee.

What Documents Prove a Name Change?

  • A court order
  • A divorce decree which lists your new name, previous name, and permits use of your previous name

Fees to Change a Vehicle Registration

The fees to update your title and registration are the same as the fees to replace a title and registration. Duplicate titles cost $60, and duplicate registration cards cost $5. Though this is pricey, you’ll still want to complete the process as soon as possible. You shouldn’t drive with out-of-date information on your vehicle’s title and your registration card.

The following payment methods are accepted by all New Jersey MVC offices:

  • Cash
  • Checks
  • Money orders
  • American Express cards
  • Visa cards
  • MasterCard

No other credit or debit cards will be accepted, so be sure you have a verified form of payment before you submit your application.
